Plan for Warm Days and Cool Nights in Orange Beach in March

The weather forecast is often the first thing we check when planning a getaway. March is a dry month for Orange Beach, offering just 6 days of rain on average, in comparison to the 12 days you can expect in August, the height of our rainy season. While it is possible that it may rain during your visit, most storms blow in and out relatively quickly, leaving you plenty of sunshine to continue your March adventures.

The temperatures may reach as high as the low 70s, with 72 degrees being the average March high. As the sun falls back into the Gulf and the moon rises, casting its ethereal glow over water and sand, the mercury may fall as low as 52 degrees, making your March getaway an idyllic vacation experience.

Spring Break Crowds?

Spring Break is fast becoming one of the most popular vacation times, especially as primary schools are offering longer breaks than ever before, and you may be worried that Spring Break crowds will make Orange Beach, Alabama, in March crowded, expensive, and uncomfortable for the average family. We are thrilled to be able to put your mind at ease, because even though the beaches will be more crowded as the sun shines brighter and the temperatures begin to remind us that summer is not far off, our Gulfside town still remains quiet.

Yes, there may be some college students enjoying their Spring Break at the beach, but we have one rule that keeps most of them away. Alcohol is banned on the beach from March 1st through April 28th, and that is a law that is strictly enforced with increased patrols helping to keep the peace. This means that although the beaches may be more crowded during your March visit, most of your fellow beach goers are going to be quiet families such as yours, enjoying sun, sand, surf, and family time.

Beach Days Are Good for the Soul

Obviously, one of the first questions you might have in mind is whether you will get to enjoy the beaches of Orange Beach during your March adventures, and the answer is a qualified yes. Yes, the sun will be shining during most days of your stay, and yes, 72 degrees could be considered warm enough for our cold weather guests to consider swimming, but you must remember that nights drop into the 50s. The chilly nights will keep the Gulf from warming up enough to feel comfortable swimming, but you may still want to spend a day at the beach anyway.

Building sandcastles with your kids and walking along water’s edge, feeling the sun warm your shoulders as cool waters snake around your ankles are beloved beach day activities that are destined to be the ones you remember fondly after returning home, even if you never find yourself swimming in our clear waters.

March Festivals for Added Fun

Orange Beach, Alabama, in March is an excellent month for festivals, as the excitement for summer starts to build. As you explore all the fun festivals held in March, you will enjoy a better understanding of Orange Beach and everything that makes it wonderful.

Ballyhoo Festival of Art, First Weekend in March, 20110 AL-135 in Gulf Shores

The Ballyhoo Festival of Art isn’t held in Orange Beach, but its location in Gulf Shores is so close to our Orange Beach retreats, you probably wouldn’t have known the difference if we hadn’t told you. This wonderful festival celebrates all the arts, offering live music, food vendors, and visual art vendors, ensuring that all your senses will be entertained. If the excitement stopped there, you would still feel as if you had experienced the best Orange Beach has to offer, but it offers so much more, including a cultural celebration that will bring you joy while giving you an authentic glimpse into our Gulf front town.

Orange Beach Festival of Art, Second Weekend in March, Coastal Arts Center

The most talented artists in the world are attracted to the most beautiful places in the world, and judging by the number of art shows that can be found in the Orange Beach area, our town is one of those beautiful places! The Orange Beach Festival of Art, held the second weekend in March at the Coastal Arts Center, is a celebration of all the arts, including visual, performing, literary, musical, and culinary. Costing nothing to attend and offering two stages on which the best live music will be played, this festival has been an OB staple for 50 years.

The Wharf Boat & Yacht Show, Third Weekend in March, The Wharf in Orange Beach

The Wharf is more than a mall. It is a gathering place for many local events, including the Wharf Boat & Yacht Show which is held every March, displaying over $100 million dollars’ worth of boats and marine products. This event gives us all a peek into how the other half lives, featuring high-end yachts to explore, but with over 120 vendors, live music, and many very delicious food vendors, you are sure to find something that you can’t resist that will be right in your price range. As far as the more expensive items, well, it’s always nice to dream, don’t you think?

More Ways to Play in March

The month of March is so beautiful, you will want to spend as much time as possible playing outside. It’s hard to stay indoors when you see the sun shining, when you know that the salt air will feel warm on skin that probably hasn’t felt sunshine in far too long. And although there are many indoor activities that we will discuss shortly, these next paragraphs are going to explore all the ways to play outside during your March visit to Orange Beach.

Sail Wild Hearts, 27101 Perdido Beach Boulevard, Open Daily 8AM Until 6PM

You may not want to swim in the still-too-cool waters of the Gulf, but that doesn’t mean you have to avoid it altogether, especially if you play on TOP of the water instead of under the water. Sail Wild Hearts is one of our favorite water adventures!

For those who visited the Wharf Boat & Yacht Show, you are probably still feeling a little bit of yacht envy, and Wild Hearts, a 53-foot yacht, will help ease the pain. Offering sunset cruises, dolphin tours, and a particularly exciting Dolphin and Blue Angel Sail, your time on the yacht will be memorable. The Dolphin and Blue Angel Sail mixes a dolphin cruise (snacks and beverages included) with the opportunity to see the Blue Angels fly in Pensacola and is generally only available from the very end of March through October, so be sure to check the schedule to discover if you will be able to engage in this exciting activity.

Hiking the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail, 24037 Perdido Beach Boulevard

The summer months may be a little too warm for hiking, but your March visit will be the perfect time to experience a hike or bike ride along the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail. Hikers and bikers can explore a variety of ecosystems along the trail, including forests of pine trees, coastal sands, and wetland alligator habitats. Pack a picnic lunch in your backpack—and if you are staying in our pet friendly escapes, snap a leash on your pooch—and plan on spending the entire day exploring all that makes the Orange Beach countryside one of the most beloved in the nation.

Orange Beach Fishing Charters & Saltwater Guides, 26619 Perdido Beach Boulevard

Although anytime is the perfect time to fish, and there are definitely seasons that are better for certain types of fish you may be seeking to catch, March is actually the beginning of the best fishing season, and Orange Beach Fishing Charters & Saltwater Guides is a fantastic company to try your hand at offshore angling. Offering a variety of excursions, they also provide little extras that not all charter companies will, including fish cleaning, free live bait, and a fishing license that is included with the price of the charter.

We really like that they own a number of different style boats, allowing guests to fish from a choice of catamarans or shearwaters. If you want to try your hand at deep sea fishing, they offer charters that go as far as 100 miles into the deep blue waters of the Gulf, giving you multiple options for a few hours (or a full day) of fishing excitement.

Time to Dine

Our Poole & Associates seasonal sanctuaries are known not just for their comfort, luxury, and prime beachfront locations, but also for their fully equipped kitchens that allow guests to stay in and cook a meal or two, saving money by not being forced to dine out for every meal. With that being said, however, Orange Beach is foodie destination spot, offering many, many restaurants that we hope you will have the opportunity to experience during your March visit. The restaurants listed below are just a few examples of our favorites, but be sure and stop in any that catch your eye; we can assure you that you won’t be disappointed.

Doc’s Seafood Shack & Oyster Bar, 26029 Canal Road, Open Daily at 11AM

The seafood of Orange Beach is fresher and sweeter than any you have sampled, and Doc’s Seafood Shack & Oyster Bar has long been one of our favorite places to take the family for a delicious seafood dinner offered at reasonable prices. Their Blue Plate Specials served at lunch are even more reasonably priced, offering a choice of protein and a choice of two sides, plus a corn muffin.

Ruby Slipper, 24151 Perdido Beach Boulevard, Open Daily From 11AM Until 2PM

You need to experience a good Southern breakfast at least once on your vacation, and we highly recommend Ruby Slipper, a local café known for its signature omelets and fluffy homemade biscuits. Often offering seasonal specials such as a Mardi Gras inspired menu that may still be available during your early March visit, we can assure you that every dish is worthy of being the dish you choose for your breakfast feast!

March

Spring starts a little early in Gulf Shores, or at least the temperature will make it seem as if it has started, so we will begin our spring events early in the month, instead of just listing the ones that take place after the official first day of spring. March temperatures may reach the low 70s in the daytime, and although in most places spring is the rainy season, in Gulf Shores, the summer months are the ones with the most rain.

Pack light, bring a jacket because nights will get cool, and prepare to enjoy the events in Gulf Shores that March brings as listed below. But remember, although this guide is to Gulf Shores events, the towns of Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, and Fort Morgan Beach are tightly intertwined, so we will talk about events in all the towns, making note of which one the festival or event will take place in.

Discover the top spring events in Gulf Shores

Ballyhoo Festival, First Full Weekend in March, Lake Shelby at Gulf State Park in Gulf Shores

The most beautiful places on earth attract the most talented artists on earth, and the Ballyhoo Festival, a juried fine art show with over 100 artists competing, will prove to you how right we are. Offering live entertainment, the 2026 festival will include a cultural exchange focusing on the history of the Poarch Creek Indians, plus historical narration and a tribal dance performed by dancers in authentic Native costumes.

Every year has its own theme and perspective, so if you are visiting in 2027 or you have visited in the past, you may experience something totally different. In any case, the festival will also provide food, art demonstrations, musical competitions, and of course, the juried art show.

Orange Beach Festival of Art, Saturday and Sunday in Mid-March, Orange Beach Waterfront Park in Orange Beach

This fantastic spring festival celebrates all genres of art, including acting, music, culinary, and visual arts, and is veritable feast for all your senses. Offering more than 100 vendors, the culinary portion of the art festival is where you will find the best food in the state. Also celebrating the written word and providing a kids’ art alley, there is nothing more enjoyable than walking the aisles, exploring the beautiful works of art, sampling the delicious foods, and noticing that your children are also having a fine old time as they explore all that is offered to the different age groups.

Spring Break, Mid-March Through Mid-April

Spring Break is a very popular time in Gulf Shores, but whether you are here to join in the fun with the college students or are enjoying a family Spring Break with your kiddos, we can assure you that this will be the vacation you will never forget! For our younger travelers, you can expect that local hot spots like the Hangout (101 E Beach Boulevard in Gulf Shores) or Flora-Bama (29603 Perdido Beach Boulevard in Orange Beach) will offer all the parties.

For our guests with families, however, you can explore the events in Gulf Shores going on during your visit, spend the day at the beaches of Gulf Shores, and enjoy family pool parties, barbecues, and more at home in our Poole & Associates seasonal sanctuaries. There really is something for everyone, and even though it may be a little more crowded than normal, the happy vibe, smiling faces, and sunny days will make you glad you chose our coastal town for your family spring vacation!

Experience boating in Orange Beach, Alabama

The Wharf Boat & Yacht Show, End of March in Orange Beach

If you have ever wanted your own boat or simply have wished to see how the rich people live on yachts with every luxury amenity possible, the Wharf Boat & Yacht Show is where you need to be when spring officially begins. Offering three days of unbelievable luxury and freedom, there will be over $100 million in boats and marine products to peruse, nearly 1000 boats of varying types, and more than 120 exhibitors. The numbers spell it out quite clearly, this boat show should not be missed! Also offering food and live entertainment, the weekend kicks off with the traditional Wharf Dock Walk and doesn’t end until every last person has found the yacht of their dreams, whether they have the funds to buy one or not!

The Original German Sausage Festival, Last Saturday in March, Elberta Town Park in Elberta

We’re going to take you on a little bit of a road trip for this last festival in March, but don’t worry, it’s only about a 15 minute drive to Elberta, Alabama, and the sausages awaiting you at the Original German Sausage Festival will be worth the drive! Elberta, in addition to being a good neighbor to Gulf Shores, is known for its eclectic Lady in the Lake, a fiberglass sculpture of a very large lady sitting in the lake, so be sure and drive by Barber Marina after you have had your fill of sausage. This event is sponsored by the Elberta Fire Department as a fundraiser, so be sure to purchase and eat your fill, because you are doing a good deed supporting the fire department and the community activities of this small town.

April

The temperatures begin to rise even more in April, with highs generally staying in the mid-70s and nights staying cool and breezy. April may be our favorite month of the year, and as we mentioned earlier, although there will be rain, we still haven’t reached rainy season, which hits in the middle of the summer months.

Spring Break will keep its hold on the Gulf Shores area until about the middle of the month, but from mid-April through Memorial Day Weekend, the beaches will be quiet, the wait times at restaurants will be shorter, and there won’t be as much competition for our beachfront retreats, perhaps making April your favorite month as well!

A bucket of cooked crawfish

Mudbugs & Margaritas, First Weekend in April, Heritage Park in Foley

Located just 12 miles outside of Gulf Shores, the town of Foley is known for its railroad and medical museums and for being home to the spring Mudbugs & Margaritas event, a yummy festival that rivals the German Sausage Festival in Elberta. (Fortunately, they are held on different weekends, so there is no competition!) Mudbugs are another name for crawfish, and all food vendors will be offering their own crawfish dishes.

Because there will be multiple margarita lines, no crawfish will have to be eaten unaccompanied by the frosty beverage that makes every day a little brighter! You’ll also find craft beer vendors, wine vendors, and a super-sized selection of arts, crafts, décor, and other types of merchandise. Live music will be playing all day, and a huge kids’ area with petting zoo, bounce houses, and more will ensure that all participants will think the Mudbug & Margaritas Festival is the best festival of the year!

The L.O.L. Festival, Mid-April, Gulf State Park in Gulf Shores

We head back to our hometown of Gulf Shores for this next spring event, and contrary to what you may think, L.O.L. does not mean laugh out loud (although you may do lots of laughing out loud during your Gulf Shores vacation). For the purpose of this festival, LOL stands for love our locals, making it a celebration of everything local! Local food, local music, local vendors, and local small vendors pull out all the stops to make this event one that everyone in your family will want to attend, and when you feel the love expressed, you may even wish that you were a local, too!

Alabama Coastal Birding Festival, Late April, Various Locations

This part of Alabama is home to over 300 species of birds, and it is also an important stop on the “migration trail” for billions of birds either heading home or heading to warmer climates, depending on the season, making the Alabama Coastal Birding Festival one of the most popular ones for bird lovers from all over the country. Offering four days of field trips, special events, and keynote speakers, this festival focuses on a passion for the winged creatures as well as awakening those who don’t know how important it is to protect each and every one, no matter how much of a pest the woodpecker pecking holes in our garages may be!

May

May is when summer begins its approach, offering daylight temps that are summer warm without being too hot and days that haven’t reached the levels of humidity you will find closer to rainy season. As Memorial Day approaches, the beaches grow a little more crowded, but if you are here in the early days, while schools are still in session, this really can be a dream vacation!

A hot air balloon in the sky

Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival, April/May, 100 N OWA Boulevard in Foley

This festival hits at an awkward spot in the season, being held on April 30 and May 1st, 2026, but its colorful beauty and the opportunity to fly makes it a beloved one. Offering two days of balloon flights and tethered balloon rides, live entertainment, food, and arts and crafts displays, the balloons glow and bring joy to the coast.

Orange Beach Billfish Classic, Mid-May, The Wharf Marina in Orange Beach

The Orange Beach Billfish Classic is a fishing tournament of serious proportions, offering big money prizes and the opportunity to fish for a good cause, as the proceeds go towards organizations that advocate for recreational fishermen. Attracting competitive sport-fishing teams from all over, this tournament is the only one on the Gulf Coast that is owned and operated by tournament fishermen, and even if you don’t participate in the tournament itself, watching the weigh-ins each day is always a good time!

Memorial Day Weekend, Last Monday in May, Various Locations

Even though spring continues for almost another month according to the calendar, in Gulf Shores, Memorial Day serves as the kick-off to summer, and as the temperatures continue to rise, outdoor events start to occur less often. But as expected, there will be parties at the party spots, children and their parents will build sandcastles at water’s edge, and good times will be had by all.

Fort Morgan offers a Memorial Day Commemoration that includes historical reenactments, weapons demos, and tours of the Fort. Memorial Day in Gulf Shores isn’t just a celebration of a three-day weekend; it is a remembrance of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms and a celebrations of families.

Beach Time

You’ve planned plenty of beach time just by coming to a beach destination like Gulf Shores for Spring Break. Choose from activities like sunbathing or swimming. Change up your exercise routine with a run or walk on the sand. Explore beneath the waves on a snorkeling or SCUBA trip, or up the adrenaline with jet skiing or parasailing.

XIT Escape Room

It’s one of the newest past times and can be enjoyed by everything this spring. Choose your favorite topic, or make your selection based on the number of people needed to complete it, difficulty, how scary the topic may be, and other factors. Rooms include Insane Asylum, CSI: Gulf Shores, Movie Night, and others. Solve the clues to break out in 60 minutes to win. Book online and arrive ten minutes before your appointment time to avoid a crowd in the waiting area.

Souvenir City

Part of your activities may include shopping, either to beat the heat or look for fun souvenirs. Remember your trip with a treasure from a Gulf Shores staple. The shop has been a Gulf Shores fixture since 1956 and is open daily. While you’ll collect souvenirs from the things you do, like beach adventures and other experiences, the shop boasts “thousands of gifts for everyone on your list” so you and your traveling companions are bound to find something to remember your time here.

Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo

Take a walk on the wild side this Spring Break! You and your loved ones will see over 100 species, including 22 critically endangered, endangered, vulnerable, or near-threatened species. Marvel at residents including the African grey crowned crane, a Eurasian lynx, lemurs, a number of different reptiles, and more. For everyone from the littlest guests to guests young at heart, there’s a petting zoo where everyone can pet goats, sheep, donkeys, and deer. Ask about close-up private encounters where you can touch, hold, feed, and learn about animals like two-toed sloths and others.

Gulf State Park

Enjoy the beach on your Spring Break beach vacation. Wander two miles of Gulf beachfront, swim, surf, build sandcastles, and enjoy any and all of the beach activities you can think of. The park also has a beach pavilion where you can picnic or gather together to celebrate spring. If there are anglers in the group, they’ll want to bring along some gear and spend some time at the pier. For vacationers looking for an extra adventure, try kayaking, parasailing, and more.

Fort Morgan Road Trail

Lace up the hiking shoes or rent some bikes, grab plenty of water and your sun gear, and head out for exploration and adventure. The 5.6-mile asphalt trail starts just outside the western border of Gulf State Park and stretches west through Gulf Shores. The path runs parallel to Fort Morgan Road/Highway 180, through tree-lined areas and neighborhoods, and finally ending at the Peninsula Golf Club. The trail is an easy hike or bike for most, as it’s mostly a flat surface with only a few gentle climbs at the eastern end. Bring a camera and plan on a few stops to take in the scenery. If everyone is up for it, add some difficulty on the eastern end and continue on through Gulf State Park’s Hugh Branyon Backcountry Trails.

Gulf Shores Museum

Kids in the group won’t necessarily enjoy history outside of school, but Gulf Shores has a rich one you’ll want to learn more about. The Gulf Shores Museum is located in a house that dates back to before World War II. The structure was the beach house of Valerie Cole’s family from Mobile. Originally built in West Beach, the family donated the house. It was moved from that original location to its current home after Hurricane Frederic in 1979. The museum features a number of permanent and temporary exhibits that tell the story of Gulf Shores’ history, along with programs and activities for all ages.

Those headed this way to learn more about the biodiversity of Gulf Shores will appreciate the option to sign up for an educational program led by a local naturalist nearly every day of the week.
Gulf State Park is the perfect place to pack a lunch and enjoy a spring picnic thanks to its many tables and pavilions. The nature center is a fantastic drop-by location for those visiting with kids and canoes and kayaks are readily available to rent for those who can’t wait to get out on Lake Shelby for themselves. This park showcases a spectacular butterfly garden as well as trails linked to geocaching adventures if you’re up to the task!

Enjoy Time at the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo

With temperatures on the rise in the spring, the animals at the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo find their post-winter energy and are ready for encounters when you make your way this direction!
